History
The first meeting of what was to become the National Capital Area Financial Counseling Roundtable was hosted by State Employees Credit Union of Maryland (SECU) in December 1998. The participants at that meeting voted to hold quarterly meetings to facilitate continuing education and share ideas among credit unions providing financial counseling and crcdit unions interested in providing financial counseling. In subsequent meetings hosted by Pentagon FCU and Tower FCU, Karen Wilkerson, formerly of SECU, was elected as the first chairperson of the NCAFCR and our name, National Capital Area Financial Counselors Roundtable, was adopted.
In 1999 the Capital Area Collection Managers Roundtable Group (CACMRG) invited the NCAFCR to co-sponsor their 5th Annual Education Conference for Collections to be held in April 2000. The NCAFCR accepted the invitation, the conference was renamed The Annual Education Conference for Collections and Financial Counseling, and this has become a very successful partnership.
In October 2000 official by-laws were enacted and our first official elections were held to fill vacated officer positions.
The NCAFCR Today
The NCAFCR had recently changed it's name to the Mid-Atlantic Financial Educators Roundtable.
Quarterly meetings are held in March, June, September, and December on or about the third Wednesday or Friday of that month. Members of the roundtable host meetings on a rotating basis. Our mission is to provide continuing education to our members and a forum for networking and information sharing with our peers. We are always looking to expand the scope of the NCAFCR by inviting new members and promoting financial counseling and financial education.
Full membership in the roundtable is open to all credit unions in the Washington, DC - Baltimore, MD metropolitan area with an established financial counseling program or those wishing to start one. Financial counselors and educators working in the military, employee assistance programs (EAP), cooperative extension services and non-profit counseling groups are invited to joint as associate members. If you are interested in membership in the roundtable please contact one of our current officers. There is no cost to you or your credit union other than the expense of hosting a meeting every year or two but there is an abundance of benefits!
